Support and care workers
A year of real work, in a very different place.
If you've worked in care in the UK and you're in your twenties or early thirties, there may be a route to doing that work in New South Wales while living somewhere that looks nothing like home.
The Working Holiday pathway
The short version.
Australia's Working Holiday arrangement lets eligible young people from certain countries, including the UK, live and work here temporarily. Many people use it to work in care and support roles where staff are needed.
- A UK passport
- The Working Holiday arrangement between the UK and Australia is passport-based.
- Your age at application
- This pathway has an age range, commonly discussed as 18–35. Current rules should always be confirmed.
- Care experience
- Aged care, disability support, home care, healthcare assistant or similar UK experience helps a great deal.
- Checks and training
- Australian employers will generally expect police and worker screening checks, and often specific short courses.

The work itself
What the days actually look like.
Support work here is hands-on and relational. It isn't a working-holiday job you drift through — but it is work you can be good at, and be valued for.
Aged care
Residential homes and in-home care, supporting daily living, mobility and company.
Disability support
NDIS-funded support with routines, community access, work and independence.
Shift patterns
Early, late and sleepover shifts are common; hours can be steady or flexible depending on the provider.
And the rest of it
Beaches on your days off, and a plan for after.
Some people do a year and go home with better stories. Others find the work suits them and start looking at what a longer stay could involve. Both are worth talking about before you go.
